An operational dashboard is the screen a team keeps open in a spare tab and glances at forty times a day. Not the polished one that goes to the board. The working one, the one with the queue length and the error rate and the number of orders still unshipped at 3pm. It exists to answer a different question than an executive dashboard does. Not “how is the business,” but “what needs doing right now.”
Because of that, it breaks some of the rules the executive board follows religiously. It can be dense. It can update every minute. It can show activity instead of outcomes, because for the person watching it, activity is the point. A support lead does not care about quarterly retention at 10am on a Tuesday. They care that the ticket queue just jumped from twelve to forty.
What it tracks
Whatever the team can actually change before lunch. That is the test. An operational dashboard tracks the levers within arm’s reach, so every number should map to an action someone in the room can take.
- Queue depth: tickets open, orders pending, jobs waiting. The thing that piles up.
- Throughput: how fast the team is clearing that queue right now.
- Response and resolution time: for anything with a customer waiting on the other end.
- Error or failure rate: the signal that something upstream just broke.
- Capacity: who is free, what is running hot, where the next bottleneck is forming.
A warehouse floor, a support desk, a delivery fleet, a factory line, they all run some version of this. Subject changes, shape does not. The board shows the current state of a process and flags the parts of it that are drifting out of the healthy range.
Why it updates often
Stale operational data is worse than none, because it tells you to relax when you should be sprinting. A queue number from an hour ago is a rumor. Match the refresh to the rhythm of the work. A support queue that swings by the minute wants a minute. A production line measured in shifts is fine updating every fifteen. Faster is not automatically better. It is better only up to the point where a human could actually react, and pointless past it.
How it differs from an executive view
Same underlying data, opposite altitude. The executive board rolls a month of this activity into a single outcome, like average resolution time against target.
